What Is Web Accessibility (and Why Your Website Needs It)

Web accessibility means building your site so everyone can use it - including people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive disabilities. It's often treated as an afterthought or skipped entirely. That's a mistake, for reasons that are ethical, commercial, and increasingly legal.

Why it matters

It's the right thing to do - a significant share of people have some form of disability, and an inaccessible site shuts them out. It's also a bigger market than you'd think: accessible sites work better for the ageing population and for anyone in a less-than-ideal moment (bright sunlight, a noisy room, a slow connection). Many accessibility practices - clear structure, descriptive text, logical navigation - also improve SEO and the experience for everyone. And it's increasingly a legal expectation: many regions now require websites to meet accessibility standards, and disputes over inaccessible sites are rising. (Your specific obligations vary by country - worth checking with a professional.)

Where to start

  1. Text alternatives for images - descriptive alt text so screen readers can convey what an image shows.
  2. Enough colour contrast - text must be readable against its background.
  3. Keyboard navigation - everything should work without a mouse.
  4. Clear, logical structure - proper headings, labelled form fields, sensible reading order.
  5. Descriptive links - "read our pricing guide," not "click here."
  6. Captions and transcripts for video and audio.
  7. Don't rely on colour alone to convey meaning (e.g. a required field marked only in red).

The standard to know

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is the internationally recognised benchmark, usually referenced at level "AA." You don't need to memorise it - just know it exists and that reputable developers build toward it.

Built in from the start, accessibility makes your site work better for more people, helps your SEO, and reduces legal risk - all at once.
