Custom Website vs. Template: Which Is Right for Your Business?

"Should I just use a template?" is a fair question, and the honest answer isn't always "no, pay us for custom." Both have their place. Here's how to decide without wasting money in either direction.

The case for templates

They're cheaper upfront and faster to launch, and for simple needs - a straightforward brochure site, a personal site, an early-stage business testing an idea - that's often all you need. Modern template platforms look decent out of the box.

The catch:

you look like everyone else using that template, including competitors. You're limited to what the template allows, so the moment you need something custom, you're fighting it. And "cheap" often turns expensive - businesses frequently outgrow a template within a year or two and pay again to rebuild, this time migrating everything and starting over.

The case for custom

A custom site is built around your brand, your customers, and your specific goals - not a generic layout. You get only the functionality you need, with room to add more as you grow instead of hitting a wall. Performance and SEO control are better without template bloat. And it's a real business asset you own, not a rented look.

The catch:

higher upfront cost and a longer timeline. It's an investment and should be treated like one - justified by what the site actually needs to do.

How to actually decide

Ask yourself:

  • Is this site core to how I win customers, or is it a placeholder? (Core → lean custom.)
  • Do I have brand or functionality needs a template can't meet? (Yes → custom.)
  • Am I testing an idea or committed and growing? (Testing → template is fine. Committed → custom pays off.)
  • What's the cost of looking like everyone else in my market?

The middle path

For a lot of smaller businesses, a semi-custom build - a solid platform with genuinely custom design and development on top - delivers most of the benefit at a friendlier cost. It's often exactly where we land clients who don't need a fully bespoke application.
