A bad website rarely fails loudly. It just quietly loses you customers - people who land, don't find what they need, and leave for a competitor without ever telling you why. Here are the signs to watch for, roughly in the order they cost you the most.
1. It's slow to load
Every extra second of load time sends more visitors away, and most leave before a slow page even finishes rendering. If your site takes more than a few seconds to appear, you're losing people before they see anything.
2. It doesn't work on phones
The majority of web traffic is now mobile. If your site is hard to read, tap, or navigate on a phone, you're frustrating most of your audience - and Google, which ranks mobile-friendly sites higher.
3. Visitors can't tell what you do in five seconds
Open your homepage and imagine you've never heard of your company. Can you instantly tell what's offered and what to do next? If the message is buried under jargon or clever-but-vague headlines, people bounce.
4. There's no clear next step
A beautiful site with no obvious call-to-action is a dead end. If it's not obvious how to get in touch, buy, or book, visitors won't hunt for it.
5. It looks dated
Design is a trust signal. Right or wrong, people judge your credibility by how current your site looks. An outdated design quietly suggests an outdated business.
6. You can't update it yourself
If changing a phone number means emailing a developer and waiting a week, your site is working against you. Small updates should be easy.
7. It gets traffic but no inquiries
This is the most expensive sign, because it means you're paying (in ads, time, or SEO effort) to attract people the site then fails to convert. Traffic without inquiries is a design and messaging problem.
What to fix first
Start with speed and mobile - they affect everyone and influence your Google ranking. Then fix clarity of message and calls-to-action, because those directly turn visitors into leads. A full redesign isn't always necessary; sometimes targeted fixes recover most of the lost ground.
