Website Security Basics: How to Protect Your Business and Your Customers

Website security sounds like something only big companies need to worry about. In reality, small business sites are attacked constantly - usually by automated bots hunting for easy targets, not people who singled you out. The good news: most attacks exploit basic gaps, so basic defences stop most of them. Here's what every business site should have.

1. HTTPS / SSL.

The padlock in the browser bar. It encrypts data between your site and visitors, browsers now warn people away from sites without it, and it's a Google ranking factor. Non-negotiable, and usually free.

2. Keep everything updated.

Outdated software, plugins, and themes are the number-one way sites get compromised - known holes that an update already fixed. On WordPress especially, stale plugins are the classic entry point.

3. Strong credentials and two-factor authentication.

Weak or reused admin passwords are an open door. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on 2FA for your admin panel and hosting.

4. Regular, tested backups.

When something goes wrong, a recent off-site backup is the difference between a five-minute restore and a rebuilt-from-scratch disaster.

5. A firewall / security layer.

A web application firewall filters malicious traffic before it reaches your site. Many hosts and services include one.

6. Limit access.

Give admin access only to people who need it, and remove it when they leave. Fewer doors, fewer risks.

7. Choose reputable hosting.

Cheap, oversold hosting often means weak security and slow help when something breaks. Your host is your first line of defence.

Why this is a business issue, not just a tech one

A hacked site can be blocklisted by Google, and your traffic vanishes overnight. It erodes customer trust instantly - especially if any data is involved. Recovery costs far more than prevention. And if you collect customer data at all, you may have a legal obligation to protect it.

The bottom line: security isn't a one-time setup, it's basic upkeep - like locking up at night. Most businesses don't need enterprise-grade defences; they need the fundamentals, done consistently.
